Practical information for Ontario residents, families and caregivers.
Dental benefits are part of ODSP health supports
Eligible ODSP recipients and their spouses aged 18 or older can access covered dental services under the program’s dental schedules. Coverage has limits, so ask your dental provider which procedures are included before treatment.
What dental care may be covered?
The program includes basic dental services. Additional services may be considered under the Dental Special Care Plan when a disability, prescribed medication or treatment affects oral health. A dentist or dental hygienist can assess needs and seek required authorization.
What to bring to the dentist
Ask whether the dental office participates in the ODSP dental plan. Bring your Ontario health card or another accepted government ID, or your ODSP statement of assistance. The provider verifies eligibility; most clients do not receive a separate monthly paper dental card.
What about children and dependent adults?
Children aged 17 and younger in an ODSP family generally receive dental coverage through Healthy Smiles Ontario. Dependent adults may be considered for discretionary dental benefits through Ontario Works rather than the regular ODSP adult dental benefit.
Questions to ask before booking
- Do you accept ODSP dental benefits?
- Is the proposed service covered, and is pre-authorization required?
- Will there be any out-of-pocket charges?
- If I have complex oral-health needs, should we consider the Dental Special Care Plan?
