How to Apply for ODSP in Ontario: Step-by-Step Guide

1. How do I start the ODSP application?
New applicants can apply online, by phone, or in person. However, if you are already an Ontario Works client, your financial need is pre-verified just ask your caseworker for a referral.
2. What happens at the financial interview?
A caseworker will contact you within 15 business days of your application to schedule a meeting. You will verify your income and assets, and if no additional information is required, you will generally receive a decision on financial eligibility within 15 business days (Please note it may take longer due to Public Holidays, and wait-times).
3. What is the Disability Determination Package?
If you pass the financial check, you are given a medical package. You must take this to a healthcare provider to complete. It provides the medical information ODSP uses to assess disability eligibility. You generally have 90 calendar days to complete and return the Disability Determination Package, unless an extension is approved.
4. How long does the medical decision take?
Once your medical package is submitted, specialized adjudicators review your file. Ontario states that you will receive a letter from the Disability Adjudication Unit within 90 business days.
5. What if my ODSP application is denied?
If you are approved, your benefits begin. If you are denied, you have 30 calendar days from receiving the decision to request an Internal Review. If the Internal Review does not resolve the issue, you may be able to appeal to the Social Benefits Tribunal.
