Ontario Disability Support Program Coverage

If you or a loved one are receiving income support through the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), it’s important to know exactly what benefits you’re entitled to — and how to access them.

ODSP is more than just a monthly cheque. It includes a range of supports designed to help with daily living, health, and well-being.

Monthly Income Support

ODSP provides financial assistance based on your living situation and family size. This typically includes:

  • Basic Needs Allowance (for food, clothing, etc.)
  • Shelter Allowance (toward rent or housing expenses)
  • Board & Lodging (if you live somewhere that provides food and housing together)

📉 The amount varies depending on your household size, disability status of your partner, and whether you’re renting, owning, or boarding.

Health-Related Benefits

ODSP covers a variety of health products and services, including:

  • Prescription drug coverage (through the Ontario Drug Benefit program)
  • Vision care (eye exams, glasses every few years)
  • Dental care (basic dental for adults and children)
  • Medical supplies & assistive devices
  • Incontinence supplies (Adult Diapers, Catheters, Medical Supplies, Insert Pads, and More)
  • Hearing aids & batteries
  • Diabetic supplies

Travel & Transportation

You may also be eligible for:

  • Medical travel coverage (to appointments outside your local area)
  • Transportation allowance (for people who need frequent medical visits)

Specialized Allowances

ODSP offers extra support for:

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding nutritional allowance
  • Special Diet Allowance (if a medical condition requires special food)

Employment Support

Even if you’re receiving income support, ODSP can help you:

  • Prepare for and find work
  • Get job coaching or training
  • Access disability-friendly employers

🔹 You don’t lose ODSP immediately if you start working. There are earnings exemptions and transitional benefits available.

Other Covered Items You May Not Know About

  • Batteries for wheelchairs and mobility devices
  • Repairs to approved assistive devices
  • Guide dog care
  • Assistive communication devices
  • Funeral expenses (in specific cases)
  • Adult Diapers, Adult Insert Pads, Barrier Creams, Mens Guards, Catheters, Feminine Products, Wipes, Pull-Ups, Odor Control

Final Tip: Know Your Rights

Every ODSP recipient’s situation is unique. It’s always worth asking your caseworker if you qualify for an additional benefit — some supports are not automatically offered, but you can request them.
